De la citation visuelle à la translation intermédiatique : éléments pour une approche sémiotique

Abstract : Based on Magritte’s paintings and L’usage de la photo by Annie Ernaux and Marc Marie, and questioning concepts of enunciation linguistics and semio-linguistics, this paper attempts to outline the functioning of visual quotation and the conditions of its effectiveness. First we focus upon citational strategies, on ways of assuming and integrating the quoted comments into a meaningful whole. Secondly, emphasis is put on citational regimes (different ways of picturing « an image » or « through an image »). Finally, by examining citational and translational regimes, we compare visual quotation to the translation of a visual utterance into a verbal one.
