Adsorption of amine surfactants onto kaolinite: a multiscale investigation

We have investigated the adsorption behavior of two specific amines, dodecylammonium chloride (DDA) and 3-dodecyloxypropylammonium chloride (EA), on kaolinite surfaces, a common impurity of most ores, particularly iron ores. This research combines a macroscopic analysis based on adsorption isotherms and infrared (IR) spectra and a microscopic investigation of collector adsorption on kaolinite basal surfaces at the molecular level using first-principles molecular modeling. We show that the chain length does not influence the mode of adsorption or adsorption energies for a single molecule although intermolecular interactions stabilize longer-chain molecules when several molecules are adsorbed in close proximity to one another. The presence of an oxygen atom within the chain (etheramine) is shown to significantly affect the adsorption energies. Adsorption enthalpies are also estimated for both molecules around -20 kJ•mol -1 using Langmuir models. The results indicate that both DDA and EA form monolayers on kaolinite surfaces, with EA showing a higher adsorption capacity than DDA. Molecular modeling supported these findings, revealing a tighter packing of EA molecules on kaolinite surfaces due to etheroxide group interactions and increased solubility. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments explored the influence of pH on DDA and EA adsorption. Results indicated variations in adsorption behavior with pH, shedding light on the role of solution conditions in collector adsorption.
