L' intérêt cognitif de l’enfant inhibé comme tremplin à l’émergence d’une communication interactive

Abstract : For physiological, developmental, and emotional reasons, the access to communication and language in its symbolic aspect might be hindered for some children. Previous studies have shown the relevance of the so-called « protological and language adjustement » approach, which provides the necessary conditions for them to develop this language dimension. By setting up this therapeutic method for six months with three children showing a type of language inhibition such as selective mutism, we have tried to understand how the cognitive functioning could be used as a stepping stone, to the language functioning, within a rehabilitation appropriated to each child. This clinical research emphacized the importance of thes e children’s cognitive concerns, symbolising a threshold to a rehabilitation in which they have been able to establish a room for their thoughts so that they could become actors. The attention given to their cognitive concerns enabled the children to express their experiences, and gave them the desire to interact, thus encouraging a physical attitude more attuned to the world, and for two of them, a spontaneous verbal expression. The constant adjustment and readjustment of the therapist represent a stake for the child’s recovery, who must feel welcomed in his or her cognitive concerns and be supported in his findings. Nevertheless, external factors mustn't be neglected, in particular the psycho-affective ones, which may affect the child’s involvement into therehabilitation process, requiring the implementation of complementary therapeutical approaches. As a result, our roles as speech and language therapists, consist in a constant refinement of our analysis, as well as a protological and language adjustment, providing the necessary conditions which are fundamental for the child to develop his or her communication appetence
