Wood char ashes recovery for terracota brick manufacturing
Valorisation des cendres issues de la combustion du charbon de bois dans la fabrication de briques d’argile cuite
Résumé
The valorization of local building materials in developing countries, taking into account the energy an
d environmental aspects
through
the use of
waste
is becoming more and more at the heart of the concerns of scientific research in the building sector. The
purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of wood ashes on the mechanical strengths and thermal insulation capacity
of fired
clay blocks for
construction. Thus, varying percentages by weight of wood ash (0 to 60%) have been incorporated into the m
ixtures
for making fired compre
ssed clay
blocks;
the mechanical strengths of the blocks thus produced were studied as well as their thermal
conductiv
ity, determined by the hot strip method. This work shows that, compared with the "C0" type blocks without the addition of
wood ash (0%), the mechanical strengths of the "C10" type blocks with 10% wood ash, increased by 200% three
-
point bending
tensile, red
uced by 13% in compression and thermal conductivity also reduced by 9%. While at the level of "C20" type blocks
incorporating 20% addition, there is a 15% increase in the three
-
point bending tensile strengths, a decrease of 28% in compressive
strengths and
15% in thermal conductivity. The addition of 10
%
to 20% of wood ash thus considerably improves the thermal
conductivity and tensile strength by three
-
point bending of fired clay blocks but induces a loss of compressive strength not
detrimental to the use
of these materials as filling elements in buildings.
