On residual stress development during gaseous nitriding of M2 steel

Abstract

Due to phase transformation, the residual stress evolution is deeply dependent on chemical and thermodynamical reactions during gaseous nitriding. This work will present and analyze the residual stress profiles in M2 high-speed steel samples with different gas nitriding parameters (temperatures, nitriding times, nitriding potentials). The relations of residual stress, hardness, and the corresponding chemical composition profile are studied.
