Environnement et croissance du pin maritime (Pinus pinaster ait.) et du pin noir d'Autriche (Pinus nigra arn.) : applications en sylviculture

Abstract : Forest growth and yield are primarily Iimited by water avaibility in environmentally constrainted sites. This study was conducted in order to determine how to integrate environ mental indicators relating to tree growth within sylvicultural practices and stand dynamic models. The height of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Art.) and Austrian black pine -, as weil as radial growth of maritime pine, are, under natural conditions, explained by environ mental factors in three environmentally constrained sites. ln the dry Alps site, the expression of the two components Iinked with height growth of black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) number of stem units and mean stem unit lenght - are found to be dependent on rainfall for the former and tempe rature for the lalter. ln the Landes de Gascogne site, the genetic variability in the height growth of maritime pine provenances is explained by their ecophysiological behavior. ln the coastal sand dune site, situated between Loire and Gironde, the radial growth of maritime pine is found to be primarily dependent on precipitation and to a lesser extent on temperature. The correlation between radial growth and climatic parameters are used to explain the forest dieback. Our results have sylvicultural applications at every stage in the Iife of a plantation, from its installation to renewal.The explanation of growth factors by the integration of environ mental data with sylvicultural pratices is one of the necessary conditions for the optimization of ecological functions and plantation management in sites where water is a constraining factor.
