REPRÉSENTATIONS SOCIALES DU TÉLÉPHONE PORTABLE CHEZ LES JEUNES ADOLESCENTS ET LEUR FAMILLE : Quelles légitimations des usages ?

Abstract : Through which processes is the usage norm of the technical artefact that is the mobile phone socially constructed? Based on the family dynamics found in contemporary families, how are the social representations of this interpersonal communication device structured? The method is interdisciplinary, drawing from sociology of family and of usages, as well as the communicational approach. Three usages repertories have been identified: legitimization oriented towards intra-home relations, mixed legitimization, professional and intra-family, and legitimization centred on amicable sociability. The questions of autonomy/dependence and reproduction/evolution of social and/or sexual roles seem central to explaining why cell phone usages are becoming commonplace. The study is supported by a qualitative survey based on semi-directive interviews conducted with 20 young adolescents and their families, an analysis of media discourse, and the utilization of various studies available on the subject.
