Le Tangible et l'intangible : La tentation de l'anéantissement et l'esthétique de la liturgie dans les Chroniques romanesques de Jean Giono

Abstract : The present study concerns the "Chroniques romanesques", which one will try to define as a singular and innovative genre, through the most significant works of Giono, since Un roi sans divertissement up to Le Moulin de Pologne. By relying on the diversion operated by Giono from the Blaise Pascal's conception of the entertainment, one will try to define a shape of "essential entertainment", a paradoxical and unexpected approach of the Being and the death in which the story participates completly itself. Where from the necessity of measuring, at the same time, the specific work which prints Giono in the genre of the "Chroniques romanesques", that he wholly appropriates and that he endows with an until then uncommon formal power. In this first stage, which corresponds to the invention of a new genre, it is advisable however to put forward another side, which radiates and places literally under stress this new art of the story. Giono, through the "Chroniques romanesques", maintains indeed an original word, the content of which distinguishes itself because of its nearness with the sacred and because it participates of a basic and underestimated representation of the Evil : the diversion of the productive substance of the reality for the benefit of the unique and precious wantonness of the work of art. And so will end our study, in the indecision and the discomfort which characterizes any critical speech when it attempts to define the object of its research in the glance of what denies it. The inexpressible remains, up to the end, the horizon towards which aims all the tangible subject of the story and, by the fact, the attempt of clarification which accompanies it.
