Evaluation des connaissances des voyageurs vis-à-vis des principales pathologies tropicales. Etude menée au centre de vaccination internationale de Metz

Abstract : The increase in travels to Developing Countries exposes travelers to specific health risks. In case of unexpected departures, traveler's information is more complicated as he doesn't take the time to go to a travel clinic. We envisage creating tools to assist the GP in travelers' consultations. We have conducted a detailed survey evaluating travelers'knowledge about tropical pathology before their departure overseas (Africa and Latin America). Our survey has been conducted on patients more than 15 in the international vaccination centre of the Legouest Army Hospital, Metz, France. During ten weeks from June to August 2008, they have been proposed to fill in forms before their consultation with the practitioner in charge of travel medicine in order to evaluate their real knowledge. Answers collected showed bad results whatever the pathology studied. The knowledge of the responsible agent is ignored by almost all of them with 93%.Modes of transmission are known by 32% and thus prevent methods only by 25 %.These results highlight the huge lack of travelers' knowledge. It emphasizes the importance of the GP as privileged interlocutor. He can give needed medical information during dedicated consultations in order to facilitate the smooth running of the travel
