Les accidents de trotteur chez le nourrisson: à partir d'une étude prospective réalisée aux urgences pédiatriques du CHU de Nancy

Abstract : AIMS : to study the accidents related to babywalker use by infants 5 to 15 month-old in comparison to other home accidents. METHOD: questionnaire to be filled in about accidents related to babywalker use, the victims of which were admitted to the Paediatric Emergency Department of the University Hospital of Nancy (France) between April 2005 and March 2006. RESULTS: babywalkers were responsible for 15% of home accidents (71/484) happening among 5 to 15 month-old infants. These accidents happen earlier in age and are the leading cause of children falling down the stairs, head traumas and severe dental traumas. Injuries included: three cranial fractures, a huge compressive extradural haematoma requiring surgery and two third -degree burns requiring a graft. After the accidents babywalkers continued to be used in more than one case out of two. CONCLUSION : babywalkers cause many serious accidents. We must follow Canada's example and prohibit babywalkers from being manufactured or sold in France.
