Enquête sur le tabagisme des footballeurs professionnels du Grand Est de la France (Auxerre, Dijon, Metz, Nancy, Reims, Sedan, Sochaux, Strasbourg, Troyes)

Abstract : Smoking is now the leading cause of preventable mortality around the World,.It constitutes a priority target for all prevention and public health measures.A large number of epidemiological data on the spreading of smoking in the generalpopulation are available, and regularly updated. However, even though it is usually admitted that sport is a protective factor against smoking, few data are available on tobacco use by athletes, especially professional ones.193 soccer-players have been interviewed, from nine professional clubs in the large easternarea of France, through a questionnaire of 26 items, associated with a Fagerström's test. Wehave proposed to carry out the measurement of carbon monoxide in exhaled air, the rate ofwhich has been assessed in each questionnaire.Participation in the survey was anonyrnous and voluntary. The results show that most of the players who participated in the investigation smoke lessthan men of similar age from the general population. They also smoke less than professionalfootballers who participated in a similar survey conducted during the sporting season 1993-1994.The difference in smoking prevalence between samples of professional footballers and thoseof men of the same age from the general population is more important in our study thatcarried out in 1993 - 1994, despite the overall decrease in the prevalence of tobacco use. These results should be interpreted with caution, because there is a possibility of an underreportingof their smoking by the players. The measurement of carbon monoxide in exhaledair is only a reflection of the consumption during hours before the measure. It only enables todetect large consumers who wouldn't have reported, but can not detect a low to moderateconsumption, and even less an occasional one.Apart fi-om this observation, we will retain that high level of football practice is negativelycorrelated with smoking, but even in this protected fraction of the population, preventiveactions are needed to stop the negative and easy spreading of smoking. The promotion of sport in the general population can be considered as a possible method ofprevention against smoking.
