De la connaissance du bon usage de la contraception: apport de l'étude nationale Epilule 2003 auprès de 2802 patientes en médecine générale

Abstract : Background : An estimated 200 000 yearly abortion rate in France and 23% of abortions are performed on women on oral contraception. Contraception failures can be due to inadequacies caused by lack of information on correct use. Methods : In France, 208 General practitioners (GPs) interviewed women patients, aged 16 to 49 supposed to be representative of local GP practice. Investigators filled in a questionnaire on their practising. Results : Three in four women consider that they are adequately informed on contraception and 54% of oral contraceptive users have forgotten one or several tablets over the past six months. Forgetting is twice as likely to occur in women whose latest prescription was not made by their local GP or a gynaecologist. Only 43% of combined pill users are aware of the 12-hour deadline and 79% of them know condoms must then be used until all tablets have been taken, while 74% know that what to do in case of forgotten pill is printed on the notice.two women in three consider they are not adequately informed on emergency oral contraception procedure, 8.5% know that the emergency pill can be taken as late as 72 hours after unprotected intercourse and 61% know it canbe obtained without a prescription. One intra-uterine device users in four do not know delayed periods call for a pregnancy testing. Physicians are the primary source of information on contraception. Conclusion : Women patients' inadequate level of information as exemplified in the survey, must incite doctors to systematically offer information as a matter of routine and occasionally advise on easy contraception techniques so as to curb failures.
