Analyse des aspects linguistiques, praxéologiques et genrés de la question en réunion de travail

Abstract : Asking questions was one of the concerns of the early language and gender studies and used to be seen as a communicatively inefficient and rather feminine speech act. However, this area of research has since undergone a drastic methodological change that led researchers to pay more attention to context. Despite this major shift, studies focusing on the relationship between gender and language in the workplace reach different conclusions regarding the influence of gender on language (though these primarily focus on English). Moreover, whatever conclusion they come up to, the vast majority of these studies take the very idea of feminine and masculine interactional styles for granted. The aim of this study is to examine whether gender has an influence on questioning and what other extralinguistic features could play a part. Drawing on a six-hour corpus of three recorded meetings, it describes the linguistic and pragmatic features of questions; this forms the basis for the analysis of the interactions which examines the contextual elements that might influence the act of questioning. The results suggest that gender has a minimal impact on questioning whereas other variables such as status and role seem to play a greater part. These findings indicate that a potential male/female dichotomy in terms of language should not be used as a starting point, and, above all, should not prevail on a thorough analysis of the context and its related issues.
