Jeunes implantés cochléaires : appropriation de 4 émotions

Abstract : When it affects children from birth, deafness is a disability which has important repercussions on the global and language development. Technological advances in this area have enabled the creation and improvement of the cochlear implant, a medical device that partly restores hearing and that offers an alternative when the limits of conventional prostheses are reached. The speech therapy intervention for implanted children aims at the acquisition of a functional and correct language, and the interpretation of sound stimuli that constitute the world of sound, which was previously unknown to them. During adolescence, many upheavals disrupt the youth’s emotional balance. In order to manage this period better, it seems essential that young people should be able to verbalize their emotions, understand them, but also those of others in order to adjust their behavior and reactions. For deaf children, the emotional domain is especially complex to grasp as it remains abstract and perceptible elements can’t be directly decoded. We have chosen to deal with 4 emotions frequently encountered: fear, joy, anger and sadness, with the seven young people who make up our population. In order to give them a complete and pleasant approach, and to encourage memorization, we presented them materials which offered various input modalities (auditory, visual, and audiovisual). Throughout the sessions, we analyzed the changes in their emotional active and passive vocabulary and in their ease to understand the emotions of others. Data were collected through video recordings and the completion of specifically created grids. At the end of the sessions, we noticed that the emotional vocabulary was enriched, diversified and clarified for each youth participant. Their understanding of emotions was satisfactory at the beginning, but we found out that the main difficulty concerned the verbalization of what they understood, imagined or interpreted.
