Incidence du vieillissement vocal sur la qualité de la voix projetée de l’enseignant

Abstract : PURPOSE: To evaluate the existing impact -or not -of vocal ageing on the quality of teachers’ projected voice and offer preventive suggestions. METHODS: A subjective and objective study with 80 participants who were divided into 4 distinct groups: 25 to 50 years old teachers, teachers aged 50 years or more, anyone from 25 to 50 years old and anyone from 50 years old or more. First, they completed a questionnaire and vocal self-assessment. In second phase, their voices were recorded and their vocal spectrum was ananalysed with Praat. A scale of clinical evaluation of vocal tone was created for this purpose. RESULTS: Presbyphonia still is an unknown phenomenon which occurs to teachers as well as to all sorts of people. Knowledge of phonatory functioning should be improved, which would allow awareness of vocal anatomy, and thus, enable a better use of the voice. Moreover being a teacher affects the use of the voice: comfort and vocal quality are deeply linked. Lastly, the age of a teacher impacts on vocal quality: presbyphonia is linked to a lack of abdominal support and therefore a diminished use of the projected voice through its various acoustic parameters. CONCLUSION: Teachers’ lack of knowledge about vocal functioning leads to inappropriate use of their voice. Presbyphonia is largely responsible for the deterioration of the voice. Yet, advice about how to care for one’s voice and vocal hygiene, as well as a better knowledge of the phonatory system functioning could be beneficial for the teacher and his/her ageing voice.
