Etat sanitaire du châtaignier en Charente : état des lieux de la ressource, outils de diagnostic, adaptation des itinéraires sylvicoles

Abstract : The diebacks of the chestnut tree are noticed since already a long time, but its increasing impact worries. Therefore, several studies on this species have been undertaken in France. This study examines the health of the chestnut tree in Charente, especially in Horte and Tardoire and in Sud-Charente. The first aim of this study is to describe and to quantify the health status of the chestnut tree. The second aim of the study consists in identifying the causes of dieback, explain it, and finally propose technical routes (itineraries) adapted to the stations met. On the study area, chestnut tree appears to be on the verge of its regional distribution area, concerning both the temperatures (T= 12.5°C) and the climatic water balance (P-ETP0608=-190mm). Rising temperatures in the recent years speed up his decline and increase the impact of pathogens such as ink disease and chestnut blight. To keep the chestnut tree in the study area and to supply local channels, management of chestnut tree should be adapted. The richest sites will be able to maintain this species and produce good quality wood. The poorest will have to use other species to accompany chestnut tree or replace it.
