Regards sur le corps de l'« athlétesse » au cours du développement de l'athlétisme moderne

Abstract : The development of athletics in the twentieth century tells us about the control and manipulation of the female athlete's body. The practice of female athletics differs form that of men because of the view on women's bodies, their acceptance in a virile-connoted sport. According to societies and times, the standards regarding bodies fluctuate. The evolution of women's rights added to the gradual liberation of the body leads the public to get reviewed representations of these new sportswomen. References in the fields of literature and the media seem to suggest that the high-performance athlete is preferred feminine with a body respecting certain aesthetic codes.
