L’impact des normes IFRS sur les Instruments Financiers : IAS 39

Résumé

IAS (International Accounting Standards) are accounting standards which apply as from 1 January 2005 for companies listed in France. These standards allow better harmonisation of accounting standards between countries which before, had their own accounting models. As a consequence of adoption of these standards, we are moving from “a prudent” approach and the job of financial controller therefore, became a more analytical and favouring substance over form. Moreover, as far as investors are concern, the need for far more complex and detailed information emerged; listed companies require financial information systems providing higher degree of transparency and comparability of results. These standards were adopted in many countries due to the creation of the single European market and collaboration of stock exchanges throughout Europe. The apply to financial statements of European countries allow easier comparability with financial statements of U.S. companies. Currently there are forty-one standards that govern the accounting of all the European companies and their provisions allow getting a comparable view with positions of U.S. companies. Among these standards, IAS 39 is a standard that governs accounting of the financial instruments fair value. The purpose of fair value accounting is to provide a more accurate picture of the position and results of the listed companies and their financial instruments. The implementation of IAS 39 has been a real upheaval for business on its considerable impact on hedge accounting as fair value measurement. Indeed the measurement of financial instruments at fair value was the main impact of IAS 39, and the main point is still discussed today after 6 years. Furthermore, IAS 39 is by far the most complex of all IAS/IFRS, and it is one of the most challenged and debated. Since its adoption and becoming mandatory for listed companies, IAS 39 still being constantly reviewed and modified due to various market changes.
