Les stratégies polémiques vues par Pierre de l’Estoile

Abstract : Pierre de l’Estoile, in the « journals » he writes under the reigns of Henri III and Henri IV, by collecting polemical writings issued by both parts during the Ligue, gives an exceptional testimony about circulation, use and reception of these texts, in the context in which they’ve been published and sometimes later. I try to see, from a few examples, how he perceives, describes and analyses the strategies of the authors of these polemical pieces, what he says about their intentions as he conceives them, but also what he says about their real effects on the adverse part and on the larger opinion. I then try to question the actual functions and the statute of a polemical “genre” in the period.
