Intégrer la réalité virtuelle dans les formations d’enseignants en langues : Dispositif innovant immersif inscrit dans un paradigme enactif

Abstract : The enaction paradigm (Varela, 1993; 1996) indicates that cognition comes from the evolution of an individual in a given environment. The emergence of meaning is therefore achieved through the cooperation of body, emotions and mind. Applied to the field of language learning/teaching, enaction and the theories of embodied cognition within which it falls are concerned with the cognitive development of the learner in foreign languages. Drama and drama games were first considered valuable as pedagogical devices within the enactive paradigm (Aden, 2012; 2017) since they involve the body and emotions in language learning. Similarly, virtual worlds, precisely by creating an avatar that is specific to the player and reflects his.her humanity in his.her body and emotions, can also be part of the same paradigm. This is why it is possible to introduce virtual reality into language courses. This article is based on an experimental collaboration carried out from September 2018 to January 2019 with students in their second year of the Master’s degree Professions of Teaching, Education and Training (MEEF) in English and Spanish, for which the participants had to introduce an innovative device for teaching modern languages: virtual reality. Student teachers (EFS) are thus invited to understand the challenges of mediating teaching through the most recent technologies via telecollaboration projects which are carried out in virtual worlds. Equipped with virtual reality headsets to intensify the immersion, they are invited to take ownership of the system and reflect on possible pedagogical adaptations in their classrooms. The co-construction of the system and the co- determination of its didactic value in language learning were meant to emerge from this experimentation.
