Différence(s) invisible(s) : 7 parcours "extra-ordinaires" d'étudiant.e.s en situation de handicap invisible à l'Université de Lorraine

Abstract : Since the French disability law of February 11, 2005 (commonly referred to as « la loi du 11 février 2005 ») came into effect, the number of students with disabilities who have enrolled in France’s higher education system, has been on a continuous rise. One of the causes contributing to this growth lies within the evolution of the concept of disability, a concept which nowadays includes new profiles of people with disabilities. In our work, we aim to comprehend the experience of students with invisible disabilities currently registered at the University of Lorraine. During this research, we investigated the role which a student with a hidden disability takes on as ‘the stranger’, within the specific setting of higher education. Our qualitative research stems from within the streams of ethnomethodology and symbolic interactionism. Drawn from the experiences of seven affected students, we will analyze instances of academic commitment and of educational disinvestment linked to their invisible stigma, having occurred during secondary school and at university. The subjects’ capacity to think analytically and to engage in a mechanism of resilience, proves that their paths are individual examples of surmounting barriers caused by an invisible disability.
