Figures littéraires du musicien : Franz Liszt dans Le Contrebandier de George Sand

Abstract : Le Contrebandier is published on January 1st, 1837 in the Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris. Alike fantastic tale in some ways, this rather short text is also written as an opera libretto (various characters and a chorus alternately express themselves in the mode of “aria” or “recitative”). The tale is introduced as the narrative of a vision inspired by a hearing of Liszt’s Rondeau fantastique sur un thème espagnol. In this paper, an analysis of the textual clues reveals Liszt’s portrait in Sand’s work. Next, a study of the literary figure of the musician shows a real kinship between the literary and musical creative processes through the use of paraphrase as a creative device. Finally, we explain how this text is the product of a conscious aesthetic reflection, and can be seen as Sand’s manifesto for a new listening of instrumental music.
