Abstract
The nineteenth century was a pivotal moment in American society marked, on the one hand, by the rediscovery of ancient Egypt thanks to the appropriation and exhibition of antiquities for an erudite American middle class and, on the other hand, by the fear concerning a possible black origin of the ancient Egyptians. Origin questioning the very foundations of the American society based on slavery.
