Etude du dichroïsme linéaire de la couche des fibres optiques de la rétine : mise au point d'un analyseur du dichroïsme rétinien appliqué à la recherche sur le glaucome

Abstract : Retinal nerve fiber layer exploration has moved to the forefront of glaucoma research. An electro-optic slit-lamp-mounted device is described to assess the polarization degree of the light beam that has double passed trough the retina around the optic nerve head in living human eyes. The asymmetric structure of the retinal nerve fiber layer possesses a form linear dichroism and partially polarizes an unpolarized light beam that is scattered at the fundus of the eye and has double passed through the ocular media. This partial polarization is a function of the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and its measurement may be used for exploring glaucoma. The author describes several experimentations on sheep eye's retina and clear medias with spectrophotometer and then describes the device mounted called retinal dichroïsm analysor (RDA). Mathematical model and first results are given.
