Abstract : Nowadays, the emergence or re-emergence of infectious diseases is more and more often brought to public attention. Coronaviruses as well as Influenzaviruses have become "famous" due to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and HPAI H5N1 avian influenza which recently emerged or re-emerged in South-eastern Asia. Since the first African outbreak of HPAI H5N1l last February in Northern Nigeria, epidemiological links between Western African and Southeastern Asian avian viruses were studied. We compared here 3 avian viruses, avian influenza virus (AIV), chicken anemia virus (CAV) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), fiom Nigeria and South-eastern China at the genetic level. AIV was chosen for its impact on public health. IBV and CAV were chosen on the basis of a serology study carried out in South Western Nigerian commercial farms. We indeed showed that birds had very high seroprevalences against CAV and IBV : 57 and 84% respectively. Even if a few CAV or IBV strains from Nigeria and China were very close on the genetic level, no direct or systematic transmission of the viruses could be observed. AIV strains fiom the 2 regions were clearly distinct. A careful surveillance of these pathogens at the molecular level stays nevertheless extremely important to understand their transmission, evolution and to evaluate in advance how to counter them.
