La matière organique et la stabilité structurale d'horizons de surface de sols ferrallitiques argileux. Effet du mode de gestion des terres

Abstract : In the intertropical regions, the clearing of native vegetation and cultivation of native soils lead generally to drastic degradation of soil properties, in particular physical properties with increases in runoff, erodibility, compaction... All these properties are more or less dependent upon the aggregate stability (AS) of the surface horizons. Similarly, it should be noticed (i), a strong decrease in soil organic matter (SOM) contents with cultivation, (ii) a strong correlation between the SOM and AS contents of the surface horizon. The objective of this work was to get a better understanding of the relationships between SOM and AS. This study deals primarily with clayey ferrallitic soils from the Congo, Brazil and Martinique. Particle-size fractionation and hot-water extraction of soils have been used in order to study the different forms of organic matter (OM) occuring after changes in soil management and aggregate stability. The aggregate stability was evaluated by means of the contents in water-stable macroaggregates (AS), preceding and following a hot-water treatment (ASe).[...] The particle-size fractionation of OM showed that : (i) whatever the samples, the carbon contents decreased from the sand-sized fractions ( 50-2000 [micro]m) to the clay ones (0-2[micro]m), (ii) all the fractions were concerned with the carbon content variations, but to a different extent according to the fraction considered, the type of soil and management. However, the sand fractions displayed the most important variations.[...]
