Effets bénéfiques de l'activité physique sur la qualité de vie liée à la santé et la corpulence : une approche épidémiologique et évaluative

Abstract : The benefits of regular physical activity on physical health and health-related quality of life has been shown in numerous epidemiological studies, both in patients and general population. Our objectives were to contribute to knowledge on the association between physical activity and quality of life, in the general population (adult and child) and to test the efficacy of splitting up physical activity during the week in children. First, the finalization of physical activity (QAPE-semaine) and health-related quality of life (PedsQLTM 4.0) questionnaires was essential. In adults, a higher level of leisure-time physical activity was associated with a better quality of life in the cross-sectional study (mental and physical dimensions) as well as in the longitudinal study (mental dimension). A cluster randomised trial in school children showed that a same physical activity quantity did not generate difference in health-related quality of life or speed of increase in body mass index, whatever the distribution over the week. The implementation of a cluster randomized trial provided convincing results, despite some organizational difficulties in the school environment which are discussed. They confirm the discordance with observational studies, in which an association between corpulence and distribution of physical activity was shown, with no possibility to distinguish between quantity and distribution during the week. These whole results, their implication in research and public health are discussed.
