Julien Green : le Nom du Père dans la Trilogie du Sud : une quête d'identité sous le signe de l'ambiguïté

Abstract : Julien Green's southern trilogy presents fictive characters but also some of his real-life relations, as well as protagonists from the history of the United States of America. The imagination mixes with reality. The author returns to his childhood places in search of his ancestors: there, he must confront the disparity between reality and dreams. He mourns for a country and a homeland that no longer exist, and to do so the author attempts, through his writings, to make his memories and those of his mother, a woman from the South, last. We meet with the father, the human being and we try to define him with the help of psychoanalysis. We also find, the ubiquitous spiritual Father, God the Father and his Churches. Green is looking for his roots and his identity, a quest which is both captivating and perilous as he reveals the complexity of his personality. However, it is 1995, we are nearing the end of Green's life. The author, now mellowed, has through his writings, relieved himself of his anxiety, fulfilling his obligations and has offered his masterpiece to posterity.
