Caracterização dos dépositos argilosos da porção centro-sul do Sicnclinal da Moeda, Quadrilátero ferrífero, MG : macromorfologia, micromorfologia, cristaloquímica, gênese e considerações industriais

Abstract : Studies were carried on the Cenozoic deposits tram Moeda syncline, Quadrilatero Ferrifero, Brazil. ln the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene, tectonic events, led to generate small sedimentary basins. The onset of the deposition was marked by land slides, rock fall, cohesive debris flows and mud flows composed by kaolinitic clays. ln the Miocene, under humid tropical climate, iron illuviation mechanisms led to the ferruginization followed by deferruginization mechanisms, from bottom to top, originating whitish kaolinitics facies at the base, mottled and red with nodules on the at the top. The analysis-1'of physical and crystalochemical parameters of this kaolin showes to the facies of the top deposits, the kaolinite crystals are larger, weil defined and show DCOO2, IP1 and SR, which suggest a lower amount of c-axis defects, in comparison to facies of the bottom deposits. RPE spectra exhibit type 1 iron {Fe3+ (I)}, which are usually associated with high concentration of structural defects, which is characteristic of kaolinite soils. The white clays from bottom of deposits exhibit good refractory behavior for industrial application. The ferruginous facies can be used in light granulates and traditional ceramic.
