Ecrire l'histoire des évêques de Metz au Moyen Age : les Gesta episcorum de la fin du VIIIe à la fin du XIVe siècle

Abstract : The Metz bishop's story was a well-worked theme throughout the Middle Ages, enlightening with three high points. The first one takes place at the end of the eighth century when Paul the Deacon - the Great Lombard man of letters- writes a Liber de episcopis Mettensibus during his stay at Charlemagne's court. This text mixes several themes more or less skillfully such as the Church of Metz holiness, enhanced by its apostolic origins and the royal dynasty glorification, with the evocation of saint Arnoul, the ancestor of Charlemagne's family. The second high point occurs in the twelfth century when a cleric who is a part of Etienne de Bar bishop's familia writes some Gesta Episcoporum Mettensium between 1132 and 1136. Putting it into the context of universal history, this text constantly mentions popes and emperors, thereby emphasizing the Metz Episcopal lineage. A major event happens at the end the twelfth century when extensions are added to the original core of the Gesta. These additions introduce bishops differently. They portray them as true territorial princes always ready to fight for their temporal. This change emphasizes the Episcopal power, as is explained by the constant pressure applied to the Metz principality by the two other princes named the Duc of Lorraine and the Earl of Bar.
