Abstract : Because of its excellent resistance against molten glass corrosion as well as its beneficial influence on cyclic oxidation performances of nickel aluminide coatings, platinum is of interest in the glass and aeronautic industries. The first part of this work deals with efforts to improve the molten glass resistance of MoSi2 by additions of platinum and ruthenium. This study led to the investigation of the Mo - Pt - Si and Mo - Ru - Si isothermal sections revealing the existance of eight new ternary silicides. Due to their low melting points, their unsatisfying mechanical behaviour and galvanic currents accelerating the silicon and molybdenum oxidation, these systems showed a limited potential for the production of new materials with high resistance to molten glass corrosion. Next, this study confirmed the effect of platinum improving the cyclic oxidation resistance of nickel aluminide coatings by decreasing the growth rate of Al2O3 and by promoting the formation of alumina on the ?'-Ni3Al compound.
