Abstract : The zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha provides a time-integrated biological assessment of the trace metal pollution in its ambient environment. The indication depends on the characteristics (intensity and duration) of the successive pollution events and on the own protection capacities of the animal. Different biomonitoring strategies are discussed. Active biomonitoring using translocated organisms appears to be particularly interesting, since it provides the possibility to apply the indication method to rivers which are not naturally colonized by the species. In that special case, a double impact can be monitored simultaneously : the general water quality on the physiological condition of mussels and the bioavailability of trace metals in the water column. The assessment can be refined by using simultaneously a second sentinel organism, the aquatic mosses. From several point of view, both indicators can be considered as complementary to each other, especially regarding their integration capacity of water contamination. Thus, mosses may be used for monitoring short pollution events wherereas mussels appear better suited for assessing a cumulative biological impact of trace metals. Precise experimental designs for a simultaneous use of both indicator organisms are suggested. Quality grids are defined for a pragmatic interpretation of the biomonitoring results obtained with the mussels and the mosses
