Etude comparée des méthodes de mesure des coefficients électro-optique : application à LiNbO3

Abstract : The thesis presents a study and the development of optical arrangements and measurement techniques for the determination of electro-optic coefficients (E/O). This work belong to the optoelectronics area in which electro-optic applications are numerous and promising (in fields such as optical transmission, parallel processors, ...). The crystal under study is the lithium niobate, very often used for bulk modulators and in integrated optics. Nevertheless, its ferroelectric, thermo-optic and electro-optic behaviour is very complex and, as yet, not perfectly know. To determine the electro-optic coefficients, we have considered various kinds of methods, based on optical arrangements using either one beam, such as the compensator setting configurations, or two beams, such as the interferometric methods. To extract the E/O coefficient, we can perform measurements of the beam intensities, the half-wave voltage or the shift of the minimum transmitted intensity value. These methods are used with static (DC) and/or dynamic (AC) applied voltages. The report describes for each method the principle, the experimental results obtained for the rc coefficient of LiNbO3, and then a critical analysis of the results whith a view to the accuracy. After a brief presentation of the thermo-optic (T/O) effect, comparisons and discussion of the results follow. The consequences of the TIO effect on the validity of the measurement are also considered. In the last pan of this report, we describe the one beam F,IO null-setting method developped in the laboratory. In addition, we present the control and âc\ruiSition systems which enabled an automaûc executing of the experiment
