Les Tragédies de Thomas Corneille : adaptation des sources et recherche dramaturgique

Abstract : The first tragedy of Thomas Corneille, Timocrate, was one of the most popular piece of the seventeenth century though the success didn't last long. Owing to the extraordinary success, the critics defined Thomas Corneille as an author who had constantly searched to accommodate to the taste of the public. From this point of view, Gustave Reynier classified his works in three categories that reprsent the 17th century theatre's major trends : Romanesque, Cornelien and Racinien tragedy. However, we attempt to understand this author, whatever his esthetic objective was, by analysing the way he responded to the various taste of his era. From this point of view, we would like to show that there is a real coherence that runs across the diverse borrowed elements in the tragedy of Thomas Corneille. By examining the sources, we could notice that the basic ideas of the sources have been used as a material which were to create an imaginary action. These basic ideas are episodes, situations and characters of the history, the story and the other literature sources corresponded to the tendency of that era, likely to lure the public. Moreover, the important thing in the poetic of the dramatic poems is the way the dramaturgy proceed to organize a story which he made of use to make it an principle and the soul of the tragedy. On the contrary of what the critics have said, the excessive use of the materials that were to seduce the public didn't contribute to a success. Dramaturgical notions such as suspense and paradox made us possible to examine the dramaturgical coherence through some pieces, despite the different influences that they have undergone. In his other pieces, we noticed the imperfect and partial application of these dramaturgies. According to what we have observed, the success of the era is due to the perfect fulfilment of this dramaturgy.
