Les apprenants et l'enseignement en classe de langue étrangère : étude des aspects affectifs

Abstract : This research project proposes to define the influence that certain forms of behavior of an affective nature adopted in class may have on the acquisition of a foreign language. it deals most specifically with the relationship between certain forms of learner behavior, such as extroversion and spontaneity, with whether students feel at ease in the class, group cohesion and interaction, and involvement and support for the teacher, as well as the corresponding attitude on the part of the teacher with a tendency to foster or discourage these forms of behavior. Class observation (carried out on the basis of an observation outline applied to filmed classes) is preceded and followed by a questionnaire which is handed out to the students, to find out what they expect from the class and how they see what happened during it. The qualitative analysis of the opinions and attitudes adopted in class by students and teachers allows us to pinpoint certain tendencies which are likely to encourage the learning process. At the same time, a statistical study of the associations (x2) between the various parameters serves to backup the results obtained. it would seem that extrovert/spontaneous learners who are involved in their learning process, with a good relationship with the group, who are at ease in class and find the teacher to their liking (in this order) have a higher chance of overall "success" in their foreign language learning process. it would also seem that the parameters of involvement and extroversion/spontaneity in the learner are particularly closely linked to oral expression and phonetics. Teachers can have a particular influence on group involvement and class atmosphere. The teachers who are perceived to be the best are those who encourage involvement, know how to get all students to take part, treat all pupils the same, and are patient, kind and dynamic.
