Education familiale et performances scolaires des enfants de milieu populaire :

Abstract : Social disparities in academic success too often cover up major interindividual differences in the academic achievement of children from the same social class. In particular, there are many children from the working class who do well or very well in school. This thesis studies the contibution of the home environment to scholastic performance differences among working-class children, and also looks into how the dimensions of this " family education " are interconnected, rather than considering them separately as in the past. Two empirical studies were conducted to test an explanatory theoritical model of academic achievement. The first was a supplemental analysis of data from an earlier survey (Twenty Years Later, Flieller et al., 1995) ; the second was a new survey of 128 working-class families with a third-grade child. The data were analyzed using LISREL software. Depending on the submodel considered, the percent of the explained variance ranged from 40% to 60%. The results partially validated the hypothesis that the impact of a child's social class on academic achievement is mediated by his/her education in the home. The thesis also presents other results dealing with the relationship between the manifest and latent aspects of family education, as well as the family-education factors related to a child's academic achievement. One of the issues addressed in the discussion is whether or not there is a " family education " specific to the working class.
