Abstract : The study relates to adjustments of expenditures, by budget components, when households are facing an important fall of income. It begins with a presentation, in a methodological perspective, of the most important empirical studies on the subject. it goes on with a synthesis of the principal results arising from studies which relate to unemployed and presents the results obtained by the author from two surveys : "conditions de vie" from INSEE (1986) and "enquête socio-économique auprès des ménages lorrains" (1986). Eight components of household’s budget are considered: clothing, leisure, transport, home equipment, food, housing, health, expenditures for children. For each of this components are examined: its place in the hierarchy of outlays adjustments, the ways by which expenditures are reduced, the dynamic of adjustments, the relation between diminishing expenditures and different characteristics of households. For this last point, two complementary approaches are used: a descriptive one and an econometric one. The study points out the necessity of studying thoroughly the dynamic of the ways by which expenditures are reduced
