Réalisation d'un banc de mesure des coefficients électro-optiques d'un guide d'onde planaire par lignes noires : application à un cristal de LiNbO3 implanté par des protons

Abstract : Planar optical waveguides are the main element of optical integrated circuits. The investigation of their linear and nonlinear optical properties permits the optimization of their performances. For this an experimental setup using m-lines spectroscopy was mounted and automated. M-lines spectroscopy consists of using prism-coupler technique to excite the guided modes of the structure to be studied. In fact, modes spectra allow us to determine refractive index profiles and thickness of the guide using an inverse WKB method. Our test materials were H+ and He+ implanted LiNbO3 waveguides. Light ions implantation technique has been recently developed and tends to be the most useful technique. For optical losse measurements, we developed a new approach. It consists of using one prism to feed the light into the waveguide and measuring the transmitted intensity using end-fire coupling. The obtained results showed losses about 2 dB.cm-1 in H+ and He+ implanted LiNbO3 waveguides without post-annealing treatment. During this work we, also, focused our interest on the elaboration of optical waveguides in other materials. For instance He+ ions were used to produce waveguides in LTB (Li2B4O7) crystals with good optical qualities. Losses were estimated to be better than 1.5 dB.cm-1. Concerning the electrooptic measurements, we used the angular shift technique. Indeed, refractive index variation by the EO effect induces a uniform angular displacement of all guided modes spectra if we use a specific inter-electrodes gap with respect to the guiding layer thickness. The latter enables the determination of the electrooptic coefficients of the guide under investigation. For instance, concerning H+ implanted LiNbO3 waveguides, the EO coefficients r13 and r33 are rather well preserved. In addition no dependence on the H+ implanted dose was observed
