L’expressivité du blues : une exploration philosophique

Abstract : This dissertation seeks to account for expressiveness in the blues whilst avoiding a stereotyped view of the relationship between music and the emotions. Blues is commonly perceived as expressive in the sense of a vehicle for emotional communication. My aim is to challenge this conception, by exhibiting the variety of mechanisms and types of normativity that underlies expressiveness – with a particular focus on the types of categorizations (ontological, generic, stylistic) that lead to the attribution of expressive qualities by the listener. I defend the view that expressiveness in the blues is more appropriately seen as the way a listener appreciates music than as the result of a performative act from the musician. By defending this view, I understand musical expression in the blues as a kind of symbolic functioning. Given that the idea of the blues as a symbol is more than common, I show how a blues song can function as a symbol of our emotional life, and as a kind of language that can increase our understanding of reality.
