Devenir femme prostituée : une question de survie ? : approche sociologique de la prostitution à Luanda (Angola)

Abstract : This thesis entitled: "Becoming a female prostitute: a question of survival? A sociological approach to prostitution in Luanda (Angola)", is interested in the reasons that guides some women to prostitution in Luanda, and also to understand those that push them to stay there. From a methodological point of view, this thesis work is carried out mainly through semi-directive interviews with prostituted women. The results of this research show a diversity of factors that pushed them into prostitution. But the main reason for entering and remaining in prostitution is poverty. Added to this, a difficult path, with successive breaks from the family, social and cultural point of view. Faced with a context of survival, linked to their difficult situation, the only alternative to provide for their needs would have been prostitution. Our thesis shows the world of violence in which these women navigate. Indeed, considered as deviant, labeled, violated, the prostituted women undergo the law of the customers and the pimps. In front of these two protagonists, and the prostitute, money circulates, symbol of power and virility, which allows to buy women's bodies as a commodity. Our thesis reveals the hidden face of this activity, where the woman as a human being disappears, becomes a thing, a commodity, which finally will exist only by becoming "the whore, the whore" to satisfy the desires of the customers.
