"C’est une histoire vraie ! Tu pourras jamais mettre ça dans un comics !" Les histoires de guerre de Sam Glanzman et les conditions pour une autobiographie mainstream

Abstract : The American artist Sam Glanzman produced over several decades an important body of work, exploring many genres for some of the main comic book publishers. Among his works, his short stories about the US Navy destroyer USS Stevens stand apart. Published in various comic books by DC Comics between 1970 1977, these narratives offer a unique portrayal of Glanzman’s past in the Navy during the Pacific War. The analysis of the forms and themes of these stories as well as of their modes of publication offer insights on the conditions for the restitution of an autobiographical experience in a mainstream editorial context: on the one hand, the congruence between personal experience and the genres offered by the space of possibles opened by the editorial field of the time (here, war comics), and on the other hand, the respect of the editorial and narrative norms.
