L'évolution du système de soins à l'Ile Maurice depuis son indépendance en 1968

Abstract : Since its independence in 1968, Mauritius has built a healthcare system based on its colonial heritage and its cultural diversity. Initially the country had to deal with communicable diseases that were introduced on the island by the slaves from Asia and Africa. But today, the country in full socioeconomic development must deal with the changes to the western lifestyle of its inhabitants whichhave also resulted in the emergence of non-communicable diseases in particular cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. Enormous human and logistic progress has taken place thanks to a policy to improve the system. Health care was made freely available to people in the public sector. Lifeexpectancy in Mauritius has risen from an average age of 60 to 71 years of age in the last forty years. The healthcare system has adapted as much as possible to the significant social change that are takingplace. According to the WHO, Mauritius today offers a good level of health care. This thesis develops essential points in the evolution of the Mauritian healthcare system and proposes possibleimprovements which are necessary in order to provide a level of health care that is comparable to the industrialised countries.
