Implantation d’œuvres d’art dans la ville : quels effets sur l’espace et dans le quotidien des habitants ? L’expérience des habitants pour questionner la démarche nancéienne d’installations artistiques.

Abstract : This thesis questions the display of works of art in public space from the point of view of the inhabitants. First, notions of street art, cultural policies in cities, and urban spaces will be discussed, both historically and scientifically, with the help from authors and actors in both fields (arts historians and artists, philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists…). This will help clarify and understand the field of action of this study: what are the artists looking for when “going out in the streets”? What kind of impressions does street art want or have to produce? What kind can it produce? How did the institutions, and more specifically the local authorities, handle this matter and why? What are the relations between a city and its inhabitants? What does “living in the city” mean and how is this experience built? The context of the study will be presented in a second part: the city of Nancy, its aspects and institutional characteristics, what the place of culture is amongst its policy, especially concerning its attractiveness. Finally we'll propose a short description of the recent project of setting up works of art in the public space (ADN). While recent, this approach is not a first, and many other local authorities have taken art to the streets, creating artistic walks whether in Nantes, Strasbourg or even Lyon. It seemed relevant then to put this approach into the perspective of the inhabitants and their relation to the public space they live in. The main gaol is to look at the intentions behind the project and the works already in place in the public space against their real impact on the inhabitants‟ everyday lives. That is why we asked several persons living in Nancy about their impressions concerning these new works while being in front of them. Results seem to indicate a discrepancy between the intentions and the actual experience of the project by the public. There is an gap between the intentions behind the project and the reception by the public eye, especially due to the lack of layout to guide them
