Alcool et grossesse en Lorraine : étude des pratiques professionnelles et aide au repérage

Abstract : Context: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the MAIN non-genetic cause of mental disability in children. “The zero alcohol rule” during pregnancy is recommended but no tracking tool is available to perinatal professionals. In order to improve prevention towards FASD in Lorraine, the Perinatal Network in Lorraine has reported an assessment of current practices by perinatal professionals and proposed a tool to help identification.Material and Method: The proposed tool is a self-assessment questionnaire associating the AUDIT-C and T-ACE procedures. A hundred professionals selected at random as well as the midwives of the Department of Maternal and Child Health (Meurthe-et-Moselle) have been asked about their practices before testing the self-assessment questionnaire. Results: The midwives (98%) got involved more significantly than doctors (53%) (p<0,0001). 32% of the questioned professionals meet difficulties with mentioning the issue of alcohol and 30% are willing to be trained. The majority of professionals who have tested the tool have found it adequate. Pregnant women easily answered the questionnaire. Only fifteen women reported consuming alcohol while pregnant self- survey reveals that thirty eight would need a specific monitoring.Discussion: The call-up for professionals and in particular for doctors, on that theme, remains complicated. Professionals wish to be helped in locating high-risk behaviors. The proposed tool facilitates identification but improvements are needed. Conclusion: The Perinatal Network must find new means to mobilize professionals, organize trainings and improve the tool so that the alcohol consumption could systematically be discussed during consultations
