Rôle de l'oreille interne dans la fonction d'équilibration chez l'enfant porteur d'une scoliose idiopathique: approche épidémiologique du conflit visuo-vestibulaire et de la pratique d'activités physiques et sportives

Abstract : Balance control, a complex task relying on different sensory inputs, i.e. visual, vestibular and somesthesic, might be altered in children with idiopathic scoliosis. The aim of this work was to assess the role on balance control of the inner earin scoliotic children by evaluating their motion sickness susceptibility, a situation ofvisuo-vestibular mismatch (increased in case of vestibular dysfunction) and theirchoices of physical and sportive activities (PSA), which may increase the quality ofbalance control. One hundred twenty seven children with idiopathic scoliosis and 298 healthychildren (girls and boys), aged from 6 to 20 years, completed a questionnaire toassess their motion sickness susceptibility and their PSA practice. In scolioticchildren, scoliosis characteristics and anthropometric measures were also recorded(standing height, sitting height, arm span).Girls with idiopathic scoliosis were more susceptible to motion sickness thancontrol girls (p < 0,02). A larger proportion of scoliotic girls than control girls practicedPSA demanding in the use of somesthesic input (p < 0,009).The role of the inner ear in balance control in children with idiopathic scoliosisis illustrated by a less effective coping with visuo-vestibular mismatch, leading toincreased motion sickness susceptibility. This altered vestibular function influencesthe choice of PSA in scoliotic girls, but other factors probably also intervene: geneand connective tissue as well as environmental and behavioural factors.
