Tentatives de suicide chez les militaires français : épidémiologie, facteurs de risques et psychopathologie. A propos de 39 observations cliniques

Abstract : The Health Service of the French Armies takes particular interest in concern the problem of aggressive behaviours which are incompatible with military operations. The French Army operated a surveillance system to record all cases of suicide-attempts. For instance in 2007, the servicemen numbered 69 suicides and 132 suicide-attempts. From a retrospective study of 39 consecutive charts of suicidal patients treated at the military instruction hospital Legouest, we determined the sociodemographic and psychopathological factors of suicidal servicemen who were taken care of in a military hospital during the year 2007. The military population with self-aggressive behaviours is constituted of volunteers. The most frequent modality is self-poisoning by medicines (64,1 %), followed by phlebotomy (12,8%). Most of these patients (53,85 %) did not suffer from a major psychiatric disease but from a suicidal crisis lasting for a few weeks. All subjects benefited from a medical military decision. More than a third (35,9 %) were submited to the reform commission of servicemen, four for Adaptation Disorder. The authors offer recommendations to reduce risks of suicide and suicide attempts in the Armed Services.
