Prévalence de l'ostéoporose primitive chez l'homme de 60 ans et plus non institutionnalisé en Lorraine en 2006: évolution prévisible du nombre de cas en France entre 2006 et 2040

Abstract : Background : less frequent that in women, osteoporosis affects 3 to 6% of men aged 50 years or more in USA, with most severe consequences. ln France, a few studies estiinated the prevalence of this affection in men. Objectives : to estima te the prevalence of osteoporosis in men aged 60 years and more in France and the evolution of the number of cases between 2006 and 2040. Methods : we measured bone mineral density by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at 3 sites (lumbar column L1-L4, femoral neck, total hip) in 300 non institutionalized voluntary men aged 60 years and more. We obtained the prevalence rate of osteoporosis (PRO) after determination of T-score. INSEE established a projection of the French population from 2006 to 2040; PRO have been standardized (direct standardization) by these data of projection of 2006. The number of men aged 60 year and more affected by osteoporosis in France, with constant prevalence rate hypothesis during the 2006-2040 peri6d bas been estimatedResuIts : in 296 men aged 68.5 +/- 6.0 years, PRO is 28.0%, with rates varying from 2.0 (total hip) to 26.0% (femoral neck). After standardization, 29.9% ofmen aged 60 years and more would have osteoporosis in France in 2006, affecting more than 1,633,000 subjects. By projection in 2040, this number is estimated at 2,862,000 subjects, for an increasing rate of 75.2% cases. Conclusion : the number of affected men and its evolution must result to reinforce the prevention of this "silent epidemic" .
