La fragmentation historique des habitats et ses effets sur la distribution des plantes dans le paysage

Abstract : Habitat fragmentation is a major threat for global biodiversity. One of the most species rich communities worldwide, i.e. semi-natural grasslands, have significantly decreased in surface area in Europe, with remnant patches being ever more isolated. To assess how historical fragmentation affects plant diversity, we first reconstructed historical grassland fragmentation using land cover maps from a Swedish agricultural landscape from three distinct time periods: 1854, 1950 and 2011. We then defined land cover types on which we inventoried the aboveground vegetation and seed bank. In a subset of 48 plot locations, equally distributed among semi-natural grasslands and remnant grassland fragments, the vegetation was removed to monitor in situ vegetation recovery from the seed bank. These combined data were analyzed to evaluate the impact of historical fragmentation on plant species richness patterns in the landscape. Species distributions in the above-ground vegetation, as well as among seedlings from in situ seed bank experiment are affected by historical fragmentation. But the seed bank from ex situ experiment is not. Therefore in situ experiments are essentials to access the impacts of the fragmentation on the seed bank. Our most important finding it that seeds may hold the key for the future biodiversity in fragmented landscapes.
