L'affaire Maurice Cathala (1958). Autopsie d'un assassinat politique à l'aube de la Ve République

Abstract : While the Fourth Republic is tormented by a series of crises, the Algerian war causes unprecedented turmoil. The conscripts are called in April 1957, the police manifest in the streets the following year and asks for the return of General de Gaulle then, on May 13, 1958, the army rebels in Algiers and forms the Committee of Public Safety. He calls for the formation of a government led by General de Gaulle. Terrified for some, galvanized for others, political parties react and enter into conflict. Street fights and attacks are linked. It is in this tense atmosphere that the referendum campaign of September 1958 takes place and sees the death of a young militant, Maurice Cathala. This article seeks to understand the course of events and the reasons that may have led to the tragedy of September 26, 1958.
