Shakespeare und Goethe in Love. Filmische Klassikeradaptionen im Spannungsfeld von hoch und nieder

Abstract

Through the analysis of two (rather) recent movies, i.e. Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Goethe! (2010), this chapter reflects on the possibilities inherent in ambitious present-day adaptations of classic texts for the cinema. 'Adaptation of classic texts' has to be understood not only as the adaptation of classic works in the broadest sense, but also as the envisioning of the lives lived by 'classic' authors, as the movies in question entwine life and work in a more or less peculiar-and/or problematic-manner. The aesthetic value of such movies has to be measured in particular in terms of the originality, reflectiveness and complexity with which this interweaving proceeds. In the assessment, heed must be given to the phenomenon of double coding which allows assigning different "readings" to movies, especially to those of mainstream cinema, and appreciating them as products both of highbrow and lowbrow art.
